Livestrong class

Cooler temperatures and fewer hours of daylight signify the change of seasons as we enter into the month of October. For many people, October means visiting the Pumpkin Patch, drinking apple cider, and picking out Halloween costumes. However, October means something entirely different to breast cancer survivors and those who support and care for them.  October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Around the globe, special events take place in October to raise funds for cancer research, promote breast cancer awareness, and celebrate survivors.  Breast cancer survivors proudly wear pink ribbons and t-shirts, while health organizations educate the community, promote early detection, and provide greater access to screenings.

At the YMCA, we support cancer survivors all year long. Our 12-week program, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, is designed to help cancer survivors increase strength and stamina, and  improve balance, flexibility, and overall quality of life. Each workout is designed so that participants can progress at their own rate and receive one-on-one attention in a group setting. Class participants meet as a group twice a week, and they are given a complimentary household membership to the YMCA during the 12 week of the program.  This allows them access the YMCA facilities and group exercise classes as often as they want while participating in the program to help them reach their goals.

Since program implementation in 2011, the YMCA of Greater Omaha has served more than 1,000 cancer survivors in our community through the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program.

One survivor said, “The LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program helped me out of a sedentary rut and helped me enjoy exercise and establish a regular workout routine. I have more energy and less fatigue and am able to do more strenuous chores without difficulty. Staff were phenomenal, courteous, encouraging, kind, fun, professional, respectful, & fun to be around. Loved coming to the Y! Thank you for the experience!”

Whatever you are celebrating this October, I hope you take time to enjoy the beautiful weather outdoors. If you see any buildings illuminated in pink, remember they are honoring National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Happy Fall Ya ‘all!
