As 2025 comes to a close and we step into 2026, many of us begin thinking about what the New Year may bring—a new family member, travel plans, a move, or even a new job. New Year’s resolutions often come to mind as well, especially when it comes to health and fitness. It’s a time of refreshment, new beginnings, and setting new goals.
While intentions may be strong at the start, statistics show that many people quit early—23% by the first week and 43% by the end of January. But don’t let that discourage you! With the right approach, you can set yourself up for success and stay on track all year long.
Keep it simple.
Start small and build from there.
For example:
- Drink more water: Add 8 ounces of water per day.
Walk more: Park your car farther from the entrance to the store or gym.
Eat more vegetables: Try adding one new vegetable each week.
Move more: Get in at least 30 minutes of movement a day, of any kind.
Get outside: Spend time in nature to calm your mind, body and spirit. With your family, on your own—go explore somewhere new, no matter the time of year!
Prioritize sleep: Aim for 15 minutes earlier to bed a few nights a week.
- Reduce stress: Take 5 minutes a day for deep breathing or stretching.
- Mental well-being: Schedule one activity each week that helps you relax or recharge.
- Spend more time together: Commit to one family activity a week, such as a pajama and movie night at the end of a long school and work week.
Finally, consider setting one goal per month. This helps keep your focus going well beyond January and makes your goals feel more manageable.
Small steps add up to big wins.
And if you miss a day—or even a week—don’t quit. Simply reset and keep going.
Progress isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistency, about returning to your habits again and again over time.
One missed workout doesn’t undo your progress, but quitting altogether does. So be kind to yourself and take the opportunity to reset when life gets in the way.
As always, reach out to your YMCA instructor or personal trainer for support and accountability along the way.
Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year!
