STAYING ON TRACK!

The start of the new year often inspires folks to set goals and make resolutions aimed at improving their lives. Fitness-related resolutions are among the most popular, and we here at the YMCA of Greater Omaha are honored to be a part of your quest for health! We are here to support you in achieving those goals and offer a variety of options to stay engaged from group exercises classes to personal training, from small group training to virtual Y classes. Here are a few tips for staying on track with your resolutions as we head into February.

Set Clear and Realistic Goals

Before diving into a new fitness routine, it’s essential to set clear and realistic goals. Consider using the SMART criteria to ensure your goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, instead of saying “my goal is to get fit” you might say “my goal is to attend 3 dance fitness classes per week and walk on the treadmill each day for 20 minutes for the next 30 days”.

Take Advantage of YMCA Resources

The YMCA offers a wide range of resources to help you succeed:

  • Group Fitness Classes: Join classes like Yoga, Zumba, cycling, mat Pilates, or HIIT to add variety to your workouts.

  • Personal Training: Consider working with a personal trainer who can tailor workouts to your specific needs and keep you motivated.

  • Swimming and Aquatic Programs: Enjoy low impact exercises that are gentle on the joints while providing a full body workout! Lap swimming, water walking or aqua group fitness classes are all great options.

  • Small Group Training: The best of all things wrapped into one; tailored workouts created by certified personal trainers with a small group of like-minded folks who help to motivate and cheer you on.

  • Check out programs like Y Weightloss or LIVESTRONG at the YMCA to help with specific goals.

Create a Consistent Schedule

Consistency is key when maintaining a fitness routine. Schedule workouts like any other appointment to help prioritize your fitness goals and integrate them into your daily life where they become habits.

Track Your Progress

Monitoring your progress can help keep you engaged and motivated. Keep a fitness journal or use a fitness app to log workouts. Track improvements from small to big, a heavier dumbbell, a longer walk, a steeper incline, or maybe a smaller pant size. Then celebrate the wins both big and small. Perhaps a new pair of walking shoes or a new water bottle.

Stay Socially Engaged

The YMCA community is a fantastic network of support. Engage with fellow members by joining group activities or participating in YMCA events. Sharing your journey with others who have similar goals can provide encouragement and accountability. We love to share your success stories… reach out to me if you would like to be featured!

Be Flexible and Kind to Yourself

Life is unpredictable and sometimes downright hard, so it’s essential to be flexible with your fitness plans. If you miss a workout or need to adjust your routine, don’t be too hard on yourself. What’s important is that you continue to make progress towards your goals, even if it’s at a different pace than initially planned.

Nutrition is Key

Here are a couple of nutrition tips to keep in mind no matter the end goal!

  • Plan your meals

  • Stay hydrated

  • Choose nutrient-dense foods

  • Control portion sizes

  • Limit processed foods

  • Snack wisely

  • Listen to your body

  • Seek support

When we combine our fitness goals, nutrition tips, and support we can create sustainable new habits and overall healthier lifestyles. The YMCA is here to help along the way as we strive to promote healthy living while encouraging community engagement. Seek connections with our members and staff, we are here for you!
