What’s Stopping You?

Taking the Next Step in Your Health Journey

The Seattle Times dug into the reasons people state it is difficult to start their fitness journey at the gym – even with the best intentions and the desired goals in mind.

Our goal at the Y? Make sure you know WE are waiting for YOU and YOU ARE WELCOME, as is, now.

  • I’m Not Fit Enough
If you are a member of the YMCA, you are already on the right track. The YMCA perpetually strives to be a place FOR ALL. When you visit the Y, you are sure to see a beautiful blend of ages, sizes, cultural backgrounds. We know fitness is a journey, our Group Fitness Schedule is sure to have an opportunity to meet you where you’re at.
  • I Don’t want to get Bulky
Strength Training does not equal bulk. But research shows us that strength training is good for bone health, joints, mood, metabolic health and even LONGEVITY.
Martha Gulati, director of preventive cardiology at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles, shares in an NPR article: "What surprised us the most was the fact that women who do muscle strengthening had a reduction in their cardiovascular mortality by 30%," Gulati says. "We don't have many things that reduce mortality in that way."
  • I Don’t Have Time to Get Results
Gone are the days where hours of cardio are suggested for fitness, Infact, the suggested goal is 150 minutes a week. That’s 30 minutes, 5 days a week. You don’t have to tackle everything at once – start with 3, 30 minutes sessions to start a routine.
  • I’m Scared to Get Hurt / Don’t Know How to Use Equipment
All YMCA’s in the metro Omaha area are staffed with Wellness Coaches and other staff to help you with operating equipment and ensuring you feel confident with stepping up to the Wellness Center. Your Welcome Center can get you pointed in the right direction.
  • I’ll Get Bored
We are constantly creating programming to meet the interests of our communities. From line dancing to pickleball we promise if you are open to trying new things there’s fun ways to move around every corner. The only thing boring is a comfort zone!
  • I Look Fat
OK – still – come. Everyone you see at the gym is concerned about one person, themselves. Show up for yourself now.
  • I Won’t Be Able to Stick With Working Out
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The mind is powerful – if you set it up for self sabotage, you’ll prove yourself right. Begin with a hopeful mindset. Start with small goals that create victories. Your big goal may take time, so take the success of every day choices.
  • I Don’t Know Where To Start
Walking into a new space with complex equipment is intimidating, we know. That’s why the YMCA of Greater Omaha offers TWO free Get Started appointments at all of their locations. During these appointment, let us know how we can help you! Our goal is to get you on the right track to tackling your goals! Wish to set up a Get Started appointment? Click the button below. You can find the link on the right hand side of the page.
  • I’m Going to Be Sore
DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) can be part of working out and can’t hurt a little more when we just get started. Not comparing yourself to others or a former version of yourself is helpful to ensuring you meet yourself today. Again, slow and steady, friend.

Which one of these hinderances resonates with you? What is your next step to squash your doubt and delay to the healthiest you?
