May is National Water Safety Month!
Summer is coming and soon it will be time to pull out the swimsuits! In the Midwest we love a good trip to the lake, pool, or waterpark. Even if you aren’t swimming, many summer activities take place near water. Here are some tips to help prioritize safety and fun all summer long!
Designate a “water watcher” - Assign a specific adult to be the “water watcher during swimming activities. This person should remain distraction-free – no phones, books, side conversations – focusing solely on supervising kids in the water.
If possible, choose a brightly colored swimsuit – Bright colored swimsuits like neon orange, pinks, and patterns make it easier to spot a child at a busy waterpark. Colors such as blue, white, and gray can blend with the water, increasing the risk of a swimmer going unnoticed
Always utilize Coast Guard-Approved life jackets or puddle-jumper for inexperienced swimmers. These devices can help prevent accidents. Avoid relying on inflatable toys as substitutes for life jackets. Note: Always check with your pool to make sure they allow life jackets.
Enroll in swim lessons – The Omaha Metro YMCA offers a variety of swim lessons at times designed to work for you! Visit our website to view the summer availability. Check out our current swim lesson offerings.
By following these safety tips and utilizing YMCA resources, families can enjoy a fun and safe summer around the water. Remember, safety is the first step to fun!
