Find a Red Cross Lifeguard or CPR Course
Interested in becoming a lifeguard, but want to ensure you have the skills? Sign up for a Lifeguard Prep Course! Students in the Lifeguard Prep class will work towards being able to complete the prerequisites to enroll in a Red Cross Lifeguarding course at the Y. This includes being able to swim 300 yards continuously of Front Crawl and/or Breaststroke, reaching the bottom of the deep end, completing a 10 lb rubber brick retrieval, and treading water for 2 min using only their legs. Students should be proficient in Front Crawl. Click the link below to find a course (Courses run the same dates as our swim lesson sessions for 6 weeks).
Interested in Adaptive Swim Lessons? Learning to swim is a skill everyone can learn no matter what their abilities. Our program is designed by an Occupational Therapist and instructors go through specific training in order to better understand and meet your swimmer’s needs. Lessons take place in either a group with a max of three participants or on an individual basis ranging from the ages of 2+.
We offer lessons for all ages & abilities! The staff at our Welcome Centers can provide assistance or you can view our Lesson Selector to help you determine the swim lesson level your child should enroll in.
We also offer lessons for adults that need to learn how to swim or want to improve their strokes. Private or Small Group lessons are available by request; contact your YMCA for more information.
ABOUT YMCA SWIM LESSONS
YMCA youth swim lessons increase the number of children who are safe around water. Our swim lesson curriculum supports stronger and safer swimmers! Here’s what you can expect:
► Water Safety Comes First
Water safety is a key focus for every lesson, for all ages. One of the first skills our swimmers learn is to ask permission to be in the water, a safety fundamental.
► Continued Parent Communication
Our certified instructors keep parents informed with continued and open communication. You’ll feel confident knowing your child’s progress throughout the entirety of the session.
► Activity & Game-Based Curriculum
Lessons are presented to our swim lesson students through fun activities, making lessons an enjoyable experience for everyone! A key component of everything “YMCA” is making learning fun.
► Extending Lessons Beyond the Pool
Our instructors are proactive in making sure every student is set up for success and have a library of home activities available to help parents guide children through additional activities.
► Top Notch, Certified Instructors
Every class is taught by a YMCA Youth Swim Lesson trained instructor (in addition to CPR, First Aid, and AED certification.) These instructors are dedicated to building strong and safe swimmers, all while having fun.
