YMCA Healthy Living Center Receives $10,000 Grant to Support Women Aging in Place

Council Bluffs, IA — The YMCA of Greater Omaha is proud to announce that the YMCA Healthy Living Center (HLC) in Council Bluffs has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Women’s Fund of Southwest Iowa. This funding will directly support programming that empowers women to age with strength, connection, and dignity.

The Healthy Living Center is the only wellness facility in the metro area designed specifically for older adults, and more than 65% of its 2,000 members are women. For many, the HLC is more than a fitness center, it is a lifeline that provides safe, senior-focused exercise, meaningful social connection, and programs proven to improve health outcomes.

With over 40 weekly classes, clubs, and events, the HLC helps combat the harmful effects of inactivity and isolation, two of the greatest health risks facing older women. Programs like Brain & Body, aquatics classes, and group fitness options build strength and balance, while social activities such as crafts, coffee groups, and volunteer opportunities foster friendship and purpose.

The $10,000 grant from the Women’s Fund will allow the HLC to sustain and expand these vital offerings. The funding ensures women across Council Bluffs and Pottawattamie County continue to have access to affordable, high-quality wellness resources.

“We are deeply grateful for this investment,” said Rebecca Deterding, YMCA President and CEO. “This support helps us continue creating a safe and welcoming space where older women can thrive, staying active, connected, and independent.”

For many women, the Healthy Living Center is not just a gym, but a second home. With this grant, the Y will continue helping women age in place with health, joy, and community.
