Become a Lifeguard
Lifeguarding can be fun, challenging, and a rewarding career. Become a lifeguard for one of the YMCA of Greater Omaha pools. The YMCA of Greater Omaha offers American Red Cross Lifeguarding classes and YMCA Lifeguarding Classes.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Class Prerequisites:
• Must be 15 years of age.
• Must pass a pre-course screening of a 300 yard continuous swim in the following order consisting of 100 yards front crawl using rhythmic breathing, 100 yards breaststroke, and 100 yards of either stroke.
• Must swim 20 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke, perform a surface dive to retrieve a brick and swim 20 yards back to the starting point in 1 minute 40 seconds.
YMCA Lifeguarding Class Prerequisites:
• Current certifications in First Aid, CPR for the Pro/AED, and Oxygen Administration
• Minimum age 16. If under the age of 18, participant must have parental consent to take this course
• Pass the following swimming test:
a. Perform a long, shallow front dive, then swim 500 yards, including 100 yards each of: sidestroke, front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke kick with one arm forward, and inverted breaststroke kick with arms on the stomach
b. Tread water for at least two minutes with legs only
c. Surface dive headfirst and feet first in 8 to 10 feet of water and swim underwater for 15 feet
