Did you know that our community is home to the largest Sudanese refugee population in the country, and over 90 languages are spoken here? And, our community is currently experiencing an influx of Burmese refugee families who are fleeing persecution in their home country.
The Y’s Strong Kids campaign helps fund our Ready in Five Program, which helps those families assimilate into the public education system and also gives them the best chance for a successful future in their new home. This program gets the children ready to start school at the knowledge level of other children their age, and teaches the parents basic English skills, and lets them know what to expect from a public school system in America. Over 300 persons annually are served through this program.
